| Abstract: | This paper is in large part a response to Margaret F. Stieg's study 'The Information Needs of Historians' (in:'College and Research Libraries', 42(1981), p. 549/560) that indicates that, if not open to dispute in principle, in practice A.G. Hopkins'dictum that bibliographies are 'the basis of all academic study', is more widely ignored than heeded. Being part of larger study devoted to the 900-1000 serial bibliographies and indexes comprising the field of history generally, the present paper identifies 'history' - or rather the work of historians - in the widest possible sense. The author belives that there are no items included here that would not (or should not) interest some group of African historians. The paper comprises 126 entries. The author has tried to include for each entry details of provenance, scope, magnitude, currency, organization and convenience. Value judgements are appropriately included. Arterisks indicate items which merit automatically being included on every African historian's search list. One such arterisk has been awarded to 'Documentatieblad', published by the Afrika-Studiecentrum Leiden. Ind., notes. |
