Abstract: | In Tsumo-Shumo, Shona Proverbial Lore and Wisdom, M.A. Hamutyinei and A.B. Plangger have presented a well-edited list of 1595 Shona proverbs arranged according to theme in eleven chapters. This welcome addition to materials exemplifying Shona oral art provides a good source for the study of Shona thought and its expression. In this article it is the literary qualities of the proverbs which are studied in the main, under the twofold aspects of form and imagery, in an attempt to discover the underlying principles of the art which have shaped them and which are responsible for their expressive power.
