Abstract:At the 12th annual meeting of the African Studies Association in Montreal (October 15 to 18, 1969) a 'Black Caucus' of the African Heritage Studies Associations asked for a reform in the ASA's focus and structure. This article clarifies the position of the Black Caucus and the African Heritage Studies Association in the confrontation between 'Africans' and 'Europeans' with as the central issue the demand that the study of African life be undertaken from a Pan-Africanist perspective which defines that all black people are African peoples and negates the tribalization of African peoples by geographical demarcations on the basis of colonialist spheres of influence. In order to reflect this perspective is demanded that changes be made in the ideological and structural bases of the ASA. Notes. (See commentaries by F.D. Burke, P.L.v.d. Berghe, R.L. Sklar, I.
