Abstract:Gives a preliminary survey of the evidence for the practice in Africa of smallpox inoculation (the forerunner of vaccination). Especially the author is interested in regional pattern of diffusion of inoculation. The evidence consists of descriptions of the practice in sub-Saharan Africa given by African slaves in colonial America and of accounts from widely scattered parts of the continent.
