Abstract: | The research on medical ethnobotany reported here was carried out in Gloucester Village, located 2.5 miles from Freetown. The present inhabitants of the village, about 2000, are predominantly Loko and Krio. Professional herbalists and older local residents were interviewed according to a questionnaire dealing with medical plants and the method of conversion of the plants into drugs. For most people in the village herbal medicine is the only form of medical treatment utilised; others employ both western and traditional medicine simultaneously, depending on the illness concerned. Examples of drug preparation and uses are given. - Notes, ref. |
