Abstract: | Almost all major events during the first seven years of Congo's independence were touched by Tshombe's political significance. It was perhaps pre-eminently Tshombe who was instrumental in giving the Arabs some of their most active roles in the major issues of independent Africa. This theme, which also includes Arab-Israeli relations, is this paper's main concern. But ultimate focus is the delicate balance of Afro-Arab relations and the quest for continental Pan-Africanism for which issue Tshombe has recurrently assumed a critical pertinence. Demonstrated is the persistent and sometimes crucial connection between the story of Moise Tshombe and the politics of Afro-Arab relations: Algeria's independence and Katanga's secession; Towards the birth of O.A.U.; Tshombe and Afro-Arab non-alignment; The Arabs and intra-African intervention; Abduction in African politics, Tshombe, Africa and Arab-Israeli tensions; Biafra, Katanga and the O.A.U.; Conclusion.
