| Abstract: | Deals with Al-Hajj 'Umar bin Sa 'id, the third of the West African Muslim reformers, born in Futa Toro 1797, killed near Masina in 1864. In 1942 Gilbert Vieillard obtained a twofolio document in poor Arabic, undated (approx. late 1850's) seeming to be a statement from 'Abd al-Muttalib ibn Ghalib, Sharif of Makka, concerning the coming of the Mahdi, and the part to be played by Al-Hajj 'Umar in preparing this event. This document is reproduced, accompanied by an attempt to read its faulty and incoherent Arabic, with a translation. Notes. |
