Abstract: | A progressive development in the Western Sudan of a learning tradition, which started as early as the tenth century, resulted in the creation of an intellectual elite, known as the oulama, who, in the course of time, came to play an increasing role in the sociopolitical life of the States of the Western Sudan. The present article explores some aspects related to the role of the oulama in the resistance against the Moroccan invasion of 1591. It documents the forms and levels of that resistance or the lack of it when it appears to exist. It also explains the attitude adopted by a certain individual calim and the degree in which it relates to the collective body of the oulama. Aim is to explain the different attitudes of the oulama towards the Moroccan conquest. Notes, ref. |
