Abstract: | I. The article chiefly examines the conflicting interests between the Somali Republic, which in pursuing its policy of pan-Somali unification hoped that French Somaliland would vote for independence, and Ethiopia, which was concerned for its trade along the Franco-Ethiopian railroad and hoped that Fr. Somaliland would choose to remain French. II. The 'Danzig solution' contains placing all or part of the territory of Fr. Somaliland under a form of international guarantee that would assure Ehtiopia's continued access to the port of Djibouti, while assuaging the claims of Somali nationalism. The author describes the pros and cons of such a solution. III. Historical summary of the treaties and other documents relating to the border dispute between 23 Ethiopia and the Somali Republic. |
