Abstract:Description of the country, its population, some internal political considerations, the economical situation. The most explosive internal problem is the ethnic division between the Negro races of the Senegal River basin and the Moorish peoples, who occupy 90% of the country. In the realm of foreign affairs Mauritania has gradually broken out of its isolation; with France the attachments are largely sentimental and economic. The author expects that tribal ties will diminish in strength but not as fast as some believe; the racial problems will continue. The cultural attachments to France will recede gradually in favor of Arabism. The small army will embarge its political influence. Economic development will depend largely on outside assistance. The country will continue to seek her identity as a link between Arab and black Africa with a gradual shift toward the former.
