Abstract:This paper presents an analysis of variation in traditional Ga culture in Central Accra which is based on information derived from a standardized interview administered to a socially differntiated sample of Ga respondents. The fundamental issues are the differentiation of two modes of relating to culture and an explanation of variations in responses to questions pertaining to each of these modes. The first mode concerns the internalization of cultural ideas which are expressed in beliefs and social behaviour. The second mode of relating to culture involves the interpretative understanding of cultural ideas. Resting upon the distinction between those two modes the following questions, concerning variations in adherence to traditional Ga culture within the Ga population of Central Accra, are discussed: What is the nature of variation in adherence to Ga concept? Is there a consistency between cultural variation and sociological factors? If such a consistency exists, how is it to be explained? Notes; tables; appendices.
