Abstract:The account gives an impressionistic survey of Ibo religion as it emerges from the accounts of observers over the past century. It is based on the various printed works available, and on research in the archives of the mission societies, supplemented by information and by the transcripts and translations of the spoken reflections of an aged illiterate pagan. Further the article deals with the intellectual and theological confrontation and discourse between Ibo religion and Christianity, only one of the aspects of the confrontation, which began in 1857 and still continues.
