Abstract:The author discusses the significance of contracts among the Birwa of independent Botswana, in particular the way in which contracts are used to regulate certain kinds of productive exchanges between co-operating neighbours. Besides contracts a number of different kinds of exchange relationship are established by neighbours in order to secure the various services necessary for their productive activities as friendly assistance. In order to understand how it is that the different forms can co-exist within single neighbourly relationships, the author first gives an outline account of the circumstances of productive activity among the Birwa.
