| Abstract: | In African countries there is almost no registration of vital events such as births, deaths and marriages. Even where such registration was introduced, it is far from complete, and usually limited only to some registration areas that are easily accessible and controllable. Methods have been developed to estimate natality and mortality from the existing incomplete and inaccurate data and from surveys. No attempt, however, has been made as yet to find the level of nuptiality. This is the aim of the article. After an exposition of the methodology, a table gives the crude marriage ratio (marriages per 1,000 population) for 37 African countries plus the Comoro Islands, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion and the Seychelles (based on dates for years varying from 1955 to 1968). Another table gives the divorces per 1,000 married females for 17 African countries plus Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles (based on dates for years varying from 1955 to 1968). |
