Abstract:Despite the operation, in the Calabar region, of a rural maternal and child health and family planning project, infant mortality is still high. The present study suggests that the continuous acceptance and use of contraceptives will depend on the individual wife's child mortality experience, because it is observed that the higher the child loss, the higher the cumulative fertility and the lower the use of contraceptives. While causality cannot necessarily be inferred from this relationship, it does show that the availability or even acceptance of contraceptives is necessary but not sufficient to reduce fertility.
