Abstract:The data concerning the Sine (Niakhar) area analysed here were collected in the course of a demographic survey in the Sine-Saloum region of Senegal. The data relate to 8,456 live births, registered mainly between December 1962 and April 1968. Original objective was to obtain a more accurate method than the retrospective study on fertility and mortality rates in tropical Africa (see P. Cantrelle, Etude démographique dans la region du Sine-Saloum, Sénégal: Etat civil et observation démographique. Trav. et Doc. de l'ORSTOM, no. 1, 1969). In addition information about age at weaning has been obtained, a variable believed to be related to mortality in childhood and to intervals between births, i.e. to fertility. Sections: Introduction - Duration of breast feeding - Mortality between 0 to 5 years - Study of seasonal variations - Relations between weaning and mortality - The effects of the length of breast feeding on fertility - The relations between fertility and mortality - Conclusion. Notes, tables, figures. appendix, summary p. 352.
