Abstract: | The Neonatal Unit (Hurford Ward) of the Wesley Guild Hospital consists of 24 cots with adjoining sleeping facilities for mothers. After the hospital was taken over in 1975 by the Ife University Teaching Hospitals Complex the paediatric services suffered from fluctuation in consultant supervision. In 1978, these services ware supervised by commuting paediatricians from Ile-Ife on a month rota basis. Since January 1979 however, these units have been supervised on a continuous basis by the three authors of this article. This review of neonatal specialist care in Hurford Hard of Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa, was undertaken to see the effect of the opening of this special unit in 1969 on neonatal morbidity and mortality. The neonatal mortality rate is lower than figures recorded from other centres in Nigeria where neonates are admitted into the children's emergency room in the first instance, if ward accommodation is not immediately available. The authors believe that the opening of the Neonatal Unit is an important factor in the lower mortality figures. Ref., sum., tab. |
