Abstract: | Not providing a strict definition of national integration the author in hie introduction points to several problematic aspects of the concept 'integration'. As the most important starting point for an understanding of the phenomenon itself he suggests to use the concept 'national integration' in an open-ended way encompassing the notion that wholes can consist of different types of parts related in many possible ways. By comparing two cases from West Africa he illustrates a preliminary attempt to implement this approach. Scheme of the article: 1. The primordial givens in the Ivory Coast and Mali - 2. Cultural assimilation in Mali and supertribalism in the Ivory Coast - 3. Pre-independence political experiences - 4. Contemporary approaches to national integration - Conclusions. Notes. |
