Abstract:The study was done between April 1977 and early 1978, in Nairobi. 50 parents and a few nursery school teachers were drawn from a cross-section of parents and nursery schools in Kericho. Altogether 534 parents and 50 nursery school teachers were interviewed. 480 parents' and 50 teachers' questionnaires were analysed. Two hypotheses were tested. (1) The nursery school is a source of modern ideas of socialisation. (2) The parent's level of education is an important factor in adjusting to new ideas from the nursery school. Most parents do not see the nursery school as serving for socialisation much beyond preparing children to enter the formal school. However, the nursery school has influence on socialisation in a few areas especially language. Not all nursery schools but the 'good' ones can be said to be sources of new ideas about socialisation. The parent's level of education is a significant factor. High level parents were different from other parents on a number of issues. Ref., tab.
