Abstract:The disturbing fact about the high fertility observed in the Igbo region of Nigeria is that the fertility rate shows no sign of an incipient decline. Amongst the factors sustaining high fertility are the high incidence of childhood mortality, in which one in four children are dead before reaching adulthood, traditional marriage habits which are conductive to high fertility, and the attitudes of men and women in favour of numerous children - all of which result in a widespread unwillingness to cease childbearing and the virtual absence of any effective use of birth limitation. This paper indicates the contents and intensity of traditional attitudes which tend to motivate high fertility in Ngwa Igbo of Eastern Nigeria. Ref., notes, tab.
