Abstract:In July 1976 four mercenaries were executed by a firing squad in Luanda in accordance with a death sentence passed by a People's Revolutionary Tribunal. Nine other mercenaries had in May been simultaneously sentenced to prison terms. All of then were charged, inter alia, with the crime of being mercenaries. This sentencing and the subsequent executions intensified the international controversy surrounding this trial. The present article examines four ramifications of it. First it proposes to shed light on the reasons why there exists strong feeling in Africa against mercenaries; second, it elucidates the concept of mercenarism; third, it summarizes an Observer's Report on the Angola trial; and finally, it draws attention to the need for an international tribunal to try cases such as that adjudicated in Luanda.
