Abstract:During the last quarter of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, Nigeria produced a good number of men who were very eminent in their various fields of life and who in certain respects may justly be regarded as the architects of modern Nigeria. One of them was Dr. Henry Rawlinson Carr (1863-1945). Henry Carr was a man of many parts. He was an educationist first and foremost, an administrator, a lawyer, Chancellor of the Lagos Diocese, and at one time a legislator. This paper is confined mainly to an assessment of his philosophy of education which for many years influenced educational policy in Nigeria. A brief sketch of his early life helps to unfold his career as an educationist. Ref.
