| Abstract: | After a description of the largest missionary bodies, the Christian Missionary Society and the Church of Scotland Mission, the article answers the questions: what did the missionaries stand for and how far should they indulge in affairs of state. Much attention is paid to Walter Owen, Archdeacon of Kavirondo from 1918 to 1945, who argued that missionaries should be prepared to act in the interests of natives by every legitimate political method.
