Abstract: | It is in Imerina that the first independent churches in Madagascar emerged. Merina independency sprang from a number of sources, amongst which dislike of whites and questions of scriptural interpretation were of secondary importance. Rather, Merina independence had its roots in the leader's personal ambitions and a need on the part of the Merina Christian community to indigenize the church. These two themes surfaced in each of the independent Protestant church movdments in Imerina between 1833 and 1929, the broad spectrum of which is described and analysed in the present article.
