Abstract:Purpose of this paper is to make a full appraisal of the development of art education in Nigeria, and to identify and analyse the contributions which not only religion, society and, much later, government but also other agencies of art education have made to the growth (or decline) of art as a discipline. An attempt at identifying factors which militate against the successful inculcation of aesthetic and art appreciation in the generality of Nigerians is made with a view to showing what solutions could be attempted and what steps taken to ensure that a much more balanced art education system is evolved in order to practicalise the verbalised commitment to cultural awareness.
