Abstract: | Detailed inspection of original and revised Colonial Development and Welfare plans issued for the British colonial territories in Africa between the early 1940s and early 1950s (having, generally, expiry dates in the mid-1950s) suggest that, although undoubtedly dominated by sectoral considerations, these plans also included spatial objectives and policies which were, for their time, innovative, and which predicted concepts that have since become standard. Sections: The nature of spatial planning - The Colonial Development and Welfare Plans - Development regions and development areas - Centres of concentrated development - Regional and district planning - Other aspects of spatial planning - Conclusion.
