Abstract:	This paper reviews education provision policy and its results in Uganda over the period 1895-1997, dealing with school enrolment in primary, secondary and tertiary education in the colonial period and since independence, under Obote (1962-1970, 1981-1985), Amin (1971-1978), and Museveni (1986-1997). Despite the erratic, declining and inefficient education provision efforts of successive governments, the available education indicators, including data on male and female enrolment, illiteracy and people with no schooling, have been steadily improving. Tertiary education enrolment has remained a small proportion of primary and secondary levels. The private sector has been providing the bulk of education. More steady and rational government support should also give attention to secondary and tertiary education. Bibliogr., notes, ref.
