Abstract: | This paper is the introduction by the guest editors to a special issue on the use of historical research in policymaking in postapartheid South Africa. Historians have to grapple with a range of variables and a degree of complexity that more abstract models can rarely accommodate. This disciplinary bias inhibits them from setting out the policy implications of their work. Despite these barriers historical research has the potential to play an important role in policy formulation. This special edition focuses on the implications of rural historical research for policymaking and implementation. The six papers, by A.A. Costa, Edward Lahiff, Barbara Oomen, J.B. Peires, Colin Murray, and Stefan Schirmer, deal with the construction of rural local government structures, land tenure reform, land redistribution and efforts to promote rural development. Historical research is an important policy resource. A greater awareness and use of historical findings is essential for the construction of more effective policy frameworks. Bibliogr. |
