Abstract:This article analyses the riot, or massacre, which took place in Mueda, the district capital of the Maconde area, Mozambique, on 16 June 1960. On that day, a large crowd of Maconde gathered to hear a delegation of MANU (Mozambique African National Union), a Maconde nationalist association based in Dar es Salaam, which had come to ask for independence. The MANU leaders were arrested and after irregularities had begun, the army arrived and fired shots at the crowd. According to one version of the story, which has been repeatedly told, this resulted in 600 deaths. The present author used existing testimonies and new evidence to verify the Mueda story and present a renewed historical analysis of the case. He focuses on the life of the Maconde emigrant communities in Tanganyika, Zanzibar and Kenya, and the reasons for their desire to return to Mozambique in 1960. Notes, ref., sum. in English, French and Portuguese (p. 239).
