Abstract:Angola has been at war for over 30 years. The struggle for liberation against the Portuguese colonial power was followed right after independence by civil war. This article highlights the various problems Angolan women faced in the conflict. The first section provides a theoretical framework on the transformation of gender relations drawing on current literature. The second section gives an overview of women's participation in the liberation struggle, and their rewards in the postcolonial period. The third section presents the obstacles that women face in fighting for greater emancipation and ultimate disengagement from the State. Lastly, the article shows how women see the war and analyses the transformation of gender relations in Angola. The conclusion is that there is need to place gender concerns at the centre of policies aimed at the reconstruction of Angola, and for women to reorganize around peace issues. Bibliogr.
