Abstract: | This article is the introduction to a special issue on mass media and democratization in sub-Saharan Africa in the 1990s. These media play vital roles in constituting the spaces for public discourse and outlets for the expression of oppositional politics, and serve as vital avenues of foreclosure against destabilizing forces associated with the repression of opposition in many African polities. The five contributions in this volume focus on the role of traditional mass media, i.e. newspapers, radio and television, in democratization processes, as well as on the processes of transformation resulting from specific political and economic conditions in a number of case study countries (Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Nigeria, Mali and Burkina Faso). This specific focus reflects the view that in sub-Saharan Africa the traditional mass media are still far more predominant than the new information and communication technology. Ref. |
