| Abstract: | The author was involved in the training and supervision of lay counsellors in the context of an International Psycho-social and Socio-ecological Research Institute (IPSER) project for 230,000 Sudanese refugees in Uganda. 20 persons with social sciences, health and community development backgrounds were selected from the refugee population to be trained as psychosocial counsellors in a period of two months. The counsellor candidates were assessed with the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (R.F. Mollica et al., 1992) and the Depressive Symptom List of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (R.F. Mollica et al., 1987) at the beginning and at the end of the training course. The author spent several months in 1994, 1995 and 1996 in the training and supervision of these lay counsellors. This work consisted of the training of counsellors (amongst others in the use of manuals, different approaches to counselling); the further training of trainers and other health and social service groups. It was found that on the basis of the primary resource manuals, and client-oriented practical and supervision-oriented training and monitoring, effective counsellors and trainers could be produced.
