Abstract:This article argues that both men and women are involved in reproductive decisionmaking and that women cannot be held solely responsible for their reproductive health. Male attitudes may impact significantly on reproductive outcomes and it is necessary for programmes to empower both men and women to play an active role in the promotion and protection of sexual and reproductive health and rights. This is particularly important as the emphasis of family planning moves away from a focus on fertility control to include disease prevention in the era of HIV/AIDS. Two case studies, from Ghana (1998) and Zimbabwe (1988), show that men who are better informed are more likely to take responsibility for their sexual and reproductive health. Since a wife's attitude is often strongly influenced by her husband's attitude towards contraception, it is clear that male involvement is necessary for the success of reproductive health programmes.
