The Iraqw are a Cushitic people who live in Tanzania on the high plateau between Lake Manyara and Lake Eyasi in Arusha region. The task presented in a riddle is to find the word(s) that the challenger has in mind and for which the given description is appropriate. The solution consists of one or two words everybody knows. Riddling can be done at any time when people are together, and by anybody, men, women and children. The riddles of three riddling sessions recorded on three occasions in 1987, in three different locations, and with different people, are presented in their original order. Bibliogr., notes. |
