Abstract: | This special issue on women and local government in South Africa contains articles on local government and gender equity, by Mirjam Van Donk; the representation of rural women in local government, by Shirin Motala; the importance of the right to equality in local government, by Glenda Fick; and the role of local government in the mobilization of women around service delivery needs, by Subethri Naidoo. It also includes a short article on the Gender Advocacy Programme (GAP), an NGO based in Cape Town; a glimpse of life in Impolweni, an informal settlement in Durban; an interview with two female councillors, conducted by Rosalee Telela; and articles on the delivery of water to rural women (David Hemson), the right of women to basic services (Fatima Pandy and Elroy Paulus), and women and survival in inner-city Johannesburg (Lisa Vetton and Joy Dladla).
