Abstract:This special issue of 'Agenda' focuses on the act of writing and engages with the politics of writing and feminist authorship in Africa, in particular South Africa. Jane Bennett interrogates the relationship between writing and knowledge. Amina Mama reflects on her engagement with different genres of writing. Kathleen Heugh focuses on South Africa's language policy and its implementation in the education system. Gail Smith argues that young black women writers need to be encouraged to write. Gertrude Fester asserts that inequality continues to privilege white women's writing in South Africa. Ntokozo Madlala asked women writers to talk about the first pieces that they published. Jeanne Prinsloo reports on a workshop for women writing for academic publication. Relebohile Moletsane examines the writing by girls about experiences of violence.
