Abstract:This article examines the use of characters' names in Kiswahili literature (East Africa). Focusing on two Swahili novels, Mohamed Said Abdulla's 'Mwana wa yungi hulewa' (1976) and 'Walenisi' (1995) by K. Mkangi, it shows that names play a big role in the general framework of the stories. The use of meaningful names appears to be teleologically, thematically, and sometimes even ideologically significant, serving a foregrounding or a defamiliarizing role. Bibliogr.
