Abstract: | Compared to the Western market, the production of comics in Africa is negligible, and therefore its scientific reception almost nonexistent. This article deals with African comics, in particular comics in Swahili. The discussion takes place on two levels. The first level is a global perspective, with the author taking a more theoretical stance, concentrating on the comic as a narrative medium and reflecting on its inventory of representation and questions of reading. The second level is a local perspective. It looks at the setting in which the comic occurs, i.e. Swahili-speaking, urban East Africa, and takes into consideration the cultural embedding of the medium. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
