Abstract: | Given the challenges confronting Africa on the threshold of the 21st century, the future of the continent is uncertain. Yet, there is more optimism about Africa's future today than in previous decades. Many people have in recent decades predicted the rebirth of Africa in the 21st century. The current mood in Africa is indicative of a wish by the people of the continent to better understand their own reality in order to change it. This burgeoning optimism in Africa today derives from the fact that the desire for change is strong and deep-rooted. The present article explores the current mood of optimism. It analyses the achievements and failures of postcolonial Africa, examines the causes, nature and consequences of the crisis in Africa and describes Africa's prospects for the future.
