Abstract: | The Michika-Madagali area of Adamawa State, Nigeria, is an area vulnerable to both water and wind erosion. This fragility is aggravated by a high population density and a rugged and mountainous landscape. This paper looks at man-environment relations in this area and suggests how farming could be made more sustainable. It is evident that the continued use of land for agriculture over the years has led to fertility exhaustion and various forms of erosion. Fortunately, a sizeable number of farmers are aware of this and are presently engaging in important conservation measures such as cover cropping and ridging across the slope. However, in view of the intensive farming in the area and the continued use of inappropriate methods there is need for well coordinated interdisciplinary research that will help assess land use and land degradation in a systematic way.
