Abstract:This critique of representations of Cape slavery is based on visits in mid-1998 to the South African Cultural History Museum (since renamed the Slave Lodge), the BoKaap Museum, Groot Constantia and Vergelegen. Slavery was virtually invisible in the first three museums but in evidence at Vergelegen. The present author argues for changes which could be made by these museums at relatively low cost. The aim would be to generate public interest and lively debate, in order to open the way for more radical changes in the representation of Cape slavery. Notes, ref.
