Abstract:This book is based on the Zimbabwe RPED (Regional Programme on Enterprise Development) surveys, a joint undertaking of the Free University, Amsterdam, and the Department of Economics at the University of Zimbabwe, Harare. It examines the manufacturing sector at the firm level, using a three-year panel data survey carried out among 213 manufacturing firms in Zimbabwe after the introduction of the Economic and Structural Adjustment Programme (ESAP) in 1993-1995. The book is organized into three parts. Part I contains an introductory chapter and a chapter on the RPED survey (by Jan Bade, Jan Willem Gunning and Remco Oostendorp). Part II contains three chapters focusing on three different markets, namely the product market (Remco Oostendorp), the labour market (Ann D. Velenchik), and the financial market (Marcel Fafchamps). The seven chapters of Part III focus on firm performance and sector resources shifts in the Zimbawean manufacturing sector: Marcel Fafchamps and Remco Oostendorp deal with investment, Hans Hoogeveen with self-employment, Kupukile Mlambo with productivity growth and technical efficiency, Hans Hoogeveen and Takawira Mumvuma with export performance and the role of networks, Peter Risseeuw with firm growth, and Jan Willem Gunning with the impact of structural adjustment.
