Abstract: | This paper reviews the historical development of agricultural education and training in Ethiopian institutions of higher learning, with emphasis on Alemaya University. It shows that high-level training in agriculture, which began in the early 1950s, has grown over the years. Today, Ethiopia has seven institutions of higher learning which train students in agriculture and related fields. However, a host of factors have put a stranglehold on the training process and the professional competence of agricultural graduates. These factors include shortage of qualified staff, shortage of equipment and inadequate facilities, lack of library materials, weak practical training components, teaching programmes with little reference to Ethiopian conditions, and weak inter-institutional linkages. Moreover, the study sheds light on the widening gap between Ethiopia's limited capacity to train agricultural labour and the ever-increasing demand for highly skilled agricultural professionals. The conclusion is that the existing training capacity needs to be augmented considerably. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in English and French. |
