Abstract:This paper examines the impact of selected socioeconomic factors including the work ethic and the level of participation in rural development performance via community development projects among the Nandi people of western Kenya. Data were obtained through a sociological survey conducted between December 1996 and May 1997 in the Kilibwoni and Kapsabet divisions of Nandi District. The findings support the prediction that the prevailing work ethic, socioeconomic factors and participation in rural development projects have a paramount influence on community development performance. It is recommended that development planners, policymakers and implementers should look for new strategies to improve the community's socioeconomic status as well as promote people's work ethic and participation level because these are the factors responsible for the poor performance of community development projects.
