Abstract: | This paper on poverty in Sudan compares the salariat in Khartoum with that in El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, in order to provide a profile of the living conditions of employees in the public sector in a context of increasing costs of living and deteriorating real incomes. The paper examines the salariats' coping strategies (income diversification, disposal of possessions, cutting back on consumption, support mechanisms) and shows that these strategies fail to bridge the gap between income and expenditure. The paper discusses the policy implications of this development. Bibliogr., notes, sum. |
