Abstract:During the author's field research in Kebkabiya town in Darfur, West Sudan, in 1990-1992, a series of religious speeches were delivered whose aim was to inform the population on the viewpoints of the current Islamist regime on the right conduct according to Islamic principle. The messages put forward in the speeches proved open to multiple interpretations, leaving room for alternative perspectives by the population of Kebkabiya to reflect and act upon that discourse. In this monograph, the author focuses on the influence of this new discourse on the narratives of groups of working women, in order to understand the ways in which these women negotiate their positions with respect to the Islamist discourse on morality and gender. The analysis is based on women's biographic narratives and two narratives in particular, one by a teacher, the other by a market woman, are analysed in detail as part of the context in which the women speak and act. As the author was part of the context herself, her influence on the narratives is taken into account as well.
