Abstract: | The playing of musical instruments needs to be taught at school as part of the music education curriculum. The playing technique, tuning system and music structure of the 'segaba', a particular kind of African zither found in southern Africa, suggests that the 'segaba' is one musical instrument that holds a vast potential for classroom teaching and learning. The teaching and learning of the instrument is also a way of preserving a culture that is rapidly dying. The article focuses on the music of L.T. Matlapeng, a player and maker of the 'segaba' from Tlokweng in southeast Botswana. Bibliogr., ref., sum. |
