Abstract: | There is a significance to Mwalimu Nyerere's vision of education which goes beyond the borders of Tanzania. The enduring importance of his 'Education for Self-Reliance', written in 1967, goes to the heart of the challenge to education in any country: how can education reflect the values of the society in which it is embedded. This was a problem for most newly independent African countries because there were few, if any, national values. Nyerere felt that a genuinely self-reliant Tanganyika needed its own educational values. He was also keen that Tanzanians should be internationalist and Pan-Africanist. Amongst his achievements are his creation of a national identity for Tanzanians, his concepts of education and of citizenship, and his enriching of the Swahili language. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
