Abstract: | Despite the initiation of development projects, the livelihood of pastoral communities in the arid and semiarid lands (ASALS) of Kenya is becoming ever more vulnerable. This article focuses on livestock husbandry to illustrate the nature of conflicts that arise in attempts to modernize the pastoral economy. Rapid population growth rate, traditional land tenure systems, the cultural significance of livestock, the traditional system of decisionmaking and the modern system of education are amongst the root causes of conflicts in pastoral communities. The increasing decline of grazing land in space and time is the single most important factor. The introduction of ranching schemes has been the most popular approach to develop pastoral communities. However, these projects reduce the free spatial mobility of pastoralists and have not always contributed to the improvement of pastoralists' lives. Ranches have been established with different objectives, which are not always congruent with the objectives of pastoralists themselves. Bibliogr. |
