Abstract: | Rapid Appraisal of Agricultural Knowledge Systems (RAAKS) is a method of analysing Agricultural Knowledge and Information Systems (AKIS), and was developed at the Department of Communication and Innovation Studies of the Agricultural University of Wageningen in The Netherlands. The idea behind AKIS is that there are several, mutually interdependent, actors in agricultural development. RAAKS helps to visualize these actors and to make them aware of their performance. In 1995, the CARE-Macina rural development programme in Mali, which seeks to strengthen and reinforce community-based organizations (CBOs), used the RAAKs methodology in order to evaluate its development strategy. This paper discusses the details of the methodology used by the Macina team, presents some results of the exercise and elucidates changes in CARE-Macina's programme strategies aimed at strengthening grassroots organizations.
